Using an LED and some science, kids will build their own working LED flashlight, powered by pennies! No batteries required! Learn about electricity, conductivity, and energy, and take home a small flashlight that you created yourself!
Who is the Fab Lab?
The S.T.E.A.M. Room Fab Lab is a place coming soon to our community where you can go to build anything that you want. All of the tools needed to create, design, and build anything are there for you! Fab Lab is short for Fabrication Laboratory, and supplies the community with both tools and training. They will have a woodshop, metal shop, welding, 3D printing, CNC Machines, sewing/quilting/crafting, robotics, electronics, jewelry, laser cutting, engraving, plastic works, and much more!
They do this through their partnership with MIT, who created the first Fab Labs in 2007. Now there are over 200 worldwide, all connected to the Fab Lab network. The S.T.E.A.M. Room is the first Fab Lab in Iowa, and will be located in Iowa City. This model allows everyone in the community to learn to use these tools, and then use them for anything you want! They also provide personal workshops and storage space in the Lab, so that you can work on your project whenever you want! Not only does the Fab Lab provide the access, but the training as well. At the Lab, everyone will be taught how to use all the tools safely. There will be both beginner and advanced courses taught by local talent and specialists who can give pro-tips.
